Series II Illustration:
MASERATI A6GCS

The Maserati A6GCS Spyder driven by French gentleman driver Jean Estager with navigator and mechanic Jean Proto at the 1954 Tour de France Automobile. The Tour de France Automobile was a sports car race held on public roads and specialized venues around France between 1899 and 1986. The 1954 Tour de France covered a complete circuit of France, starting and finishing at Nice, with a total distance travelled of over 6,000 kilometres. The race consisted of three stages, and nine special tests, so that not only were the competitors tested on all aspects of motoring, so were their cars. The special tests were designed so they did not favor any particular type of car. The 1954 Tour was won by a Gordini T15S driven by Jacques Pollet and M. Gauthier, the Estager and Proto Maserati finished 6th overall, and first in class.
