Series III Illustration: ASTON MARTIN DB4GT ZAGATO
Jim Clark driving the Essex Racing Team Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato at the 1961 Goodwood Tourist Trophy. The 1961 Goodwood TT was won by Stirling Moss driving a Ferrari 250 GT SWB, the same car he won with the previous year, Clark finished in 4th place. The Aston Martin (registration number “2 VEV”) started its career at Le Mans earlier in 1961 where it failed to finish the race due to mechanical issues. The DB4 had an impressive season afterwards, primarily at the hands of Jim Clark. Clark returned to the Goodwood TT in 1962 driving the rebuilt (in fact new) DB4 (2 VEV, driven at the time by Lucien Bianchi, was involved in a heavy crash at Spa earlier in the year). Clark failed to finish the race after a spin on-track collected John Surtees’ Ferrari 250 GTO which was in the lead at the time. After removing themselves from their cars, Surtees glanced at Clark, but no harsh words were spoken. Clark would later say, “I think I’d have been more upset than he was if I’d been leading. In fact, he was very good about it…”. 2 VEV was fixed once again, but it blew an engine at the next race and was retired from racing.
