Series III Illustration: 1983 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
The BMW powered Brabham BT52B driven by Nelson Piquet, followed by the Renault RE40 driven by Eddie Cheever at the 1983 Italian Grand Prix, run at Monza. It was the thirteenth round of the 1983 Formula One World Championship. Nelson Piquet won the race and Eddie Cheever finished 3rd. Piquet also won the Brazilian, and European Grand Prix that season, and would go onto win the 1983 Formula One Drivers Championship over Alain Prost driving for Renault by just 2 points (Alain Prost led the championship for most of the season, at the final race in South Africa he retired due to a turbo failure which enabled Piquet to take the title). Nelson Piquet won the Drivers’ Championship in 1981, 1983 and 1987. The 1983 Formula One World Championship for Manufacturers went to Ferrari, with Brabham-BMW finishing 3rd just behind Renault.
