The race winning Porsche 917K driven by Pedro Rodríguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman at the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona. The John Wyer Automotive Engineering, Gulf-sponsored team finished 1-2 in the race (the second 917 was driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman). Redman drove both Gulf 917s, because Leo Kinnunen either did not understand his instructions to run slower, set lap times to conserve the car, or he just refused to do so. John Wyer called the race leading number 2 car into the pits while Kinnunen was driving and replaced him for a time with Redman (who followed Wyer’s instructions). The 1970 Daytona race was the first victory for the new Gulf+Porsche team, and effectively began the 917's domination of the World Sportscar Championship over the next 2 seasons (winning every race during the 1970 season except Sebring). Pedro Rodríguez with co-driver Jackie Oliver, would return to Daytona the following year with the number 2 Porsche to successfully defend their title.
