Series II Illustration:
PORSCHE 911 RSR

The Martini Racing Porsche 911 RSR driven by Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep at the 1973 Targa Florio. The Porsche RSR had little chance of winning over the powerful 12-cylinder Ferrari and Alfa Romeo prototypes, but the Porsche was a very reliable car, and the Prototypes started dropping out one after another. The number 8 Porsche continued at pace and beat out the second place Lancia Stratos by more than 6 minutes for overall victory (Porsche’s 11th at the Targa Florio). The Porsche RSR did have early success in the 1973 season, a Brumos Racing RSR driven by Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg won the Daytona 24 Hours. Unfortunately, the 57th running of the Targa Florio would be the last of Sicily’s famous road race. Unable to meet new mandatory safety requirements, the Piccolo delle Madonie circuit was stripped of its World Sports Car Championship status. Remarkably, given the race’s character, and the spectators right on the side of the road, just nine were killed in its 61 running’s: five drivers, a riding mechanic, and three spectators. The Targa struggled on as a national event for four more years, but the big factories soon stopped sending teams.
